Wigan Pier was buzzing last week as the Cultural Partnership launched The Fire Within – The Forge, the new five year cultural strategy for Wigan Borough. Spirix was proud to be part of the line-up, giving the very first public preview of Spirix Retold.

A Launch with Purpose

The Forge is a five-year strategy designed to grow culture across Wigan. It builds on the success of The Fire Within, which brought millions of pounds of investment and engaged thousands of residents. This next chapter focuses on opportunity, skills, and pride.

The launch brought together organisations from across the borough, each showing what culture means to Wigan today. Music filled the space, including a headline performance from The Lathums, while cultural organisation demonstrated how arts and heritage continue to shape the borough.

Spirix Retold: First Steps on Stage

Spirix dancers stepped forward with courage and power, presenting an excerpt from Spirix Retold. The piece draws on the Spirix origin story, using movement to bring the narrative to life. What the audience saw was just the beginning - a short preview filled with rhythm, strength, and youth voice.

The response was electric. For Spirix, the preview was a chance to show that dance belongs at the heart of Wigan’s cultural identity and that young people’s stories deserve to be seen and heard.

Building Momentum

The preview marks the start of a bigger journey. Spirix Retold will continue to grow over the coming months, with new dancers and new partners. Primary and secondary schools, the Spirix Boys group, and Spirix Youth Dance Company will all help to expand the cast and shape the work. Dance United Yorkshire will support the project as Artistic Mentors, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the project.

The project will reach its next milestone in December 2025, when Spirix Retold is performed at Trencherfield Mill. As part of the Wigan Place Partnership, the Machine Hall will be transformed into a spectacular performance venue, filled with energy, light, and dance.

What Comes Next

The Forge sets the stage for the next five years of culture in Wigan. Spirix Retold will be one of the sparks that keep it alive, connecting communities, building pride, and giving young people the chance to lead.
