A Launch with Purpose

The Forge is a five-year strategy designed to grow culture across Wigan. It builds on the success of The Fire Within, which brought millions of pounds of investment and engaged thousands of residents. This next chapter focuses on opportunity, skills, and pride.

The launch brought together organisations from across the borough, each showing what culture means to Wigan today. Music filled the space, including a headline performance from The Lathums, while cultural organisation demonstrated how arts and heritage continue to shape the borough.

Spirix Retold: First Steps on Stage

Spirix dancers stepped forward with courage and power, presenting an excerpt from Spirix Retold. The piece draws on the Spirix origin story, using movement to bring the narrative to life. What the audience saw was just the beginning - a short preview filled with rhythm, strength, and youth voice.

The response was electric. For Spirix, the preview was a chance to show that dance belongs at the heart of Wigan’s cultural identity and that young people’s stories deserve to be seen and heard.

Building Momentum

The preview marks the start of a bigger journey. Spirix Retold will continue to grow over the coming months, with new dancers and new partners. Primary and secondary schools, the Spirix Boys group, and Spirix Youth Dance Company will all help to expand the cast and shape the work. Dance United Yorkshire will support the project as Artistic Mentors, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the project.

The project will reach its next milestone in December 2025, when Spirix Retold is performed at Trencherfield Mill. As part of the Wigan Place Partnership, the Machine Hall will be transformed into a spectacular performance venue, filled with energy, light, and dance.

What Comes Next

The Forge sets the stage for the next five years of culture in Wigan. Spirix Retold will be one of the sparks that keep it alive, connecting communities, building pride, and giving young people the chance to lead.

Thank you to our dancers, partners, and everyone who supported the launch. This is just the start of a powerful new chapter.

The programme was made possible through funding from Wigan Council, via the Department for Education’s HAF scheme, ensuring children and young people in Leigh had access to safe, creative and nourishing summer activities.

Why It Matters

This summer Spirix created safe, inspiring spaces where children felt included, supported and free to shine. We reached those who need us most, invested in local talent and delivered above the national average in engagement.

Youth-Led Creativity, Lasting Change - Why Your Business Should Back Spirix Studios

What if your business could help transform the future of 300 young people every week, boost footfall on the high street and put Leigh on the map for all the right reasons? That is exactly what supporting Spirix Studios will do.

CGI mock up of Spirix Studios Renovation

What if your business could help transform the future of 300 young people every week, boost footfall on the high street and put Leigh on the map for all the right reasons? That is exactly what supporting Spirix Studios will do.

In Leigh, opportunities for young people to explore their creativity are few and far between. We know this because we have listened. Through the Looking Up in Leigh consultation, hundreds of young people told us they wanted more space for dance, performance and creative activities. They wanted somewhere safe, inspiring and, most importantly, theirs.

Right now, Spirix is doing everything it can in borrowed rooms, community halls and temporary pop-up spaces. These have kept the spark alive, but they limit what is possible. The truth is simple: our young people need a permanent home where they can flourish, and our town needs the visibility and pride that a thriving arts hub can bring.

Our vision: Spirix Studios on the High Street

In partnership with Structures Group, we are transforming an empty furniture shop in the centre of Leigh into a fully equipped, professional youth arts space. Spirix Studios will feature creative studios with sprung dance floors and professional lighting and sound, fully accessible facilities, a dedicated wellbeing room for young people, and a social space for youth work activities and community gatherings.

It will not be hidden away. Our home will sit proudly on the high street, with its doors open to everyone. We believe performing arts belong in the heart of our towns, helping to change perceptions and shine a light on the talent, energy and positivity that already exists here. It will always be led by the community.

Why this matters for Leigh

Leigh is a town where cultural activities are limited and social mobility is among the lowest in the country. Sport is widely available and supported, giving young people opportunities to realise their potential on the pitch or in the pool. For those with artistic talents, it is much harder to be recognised, encouraged and nurtured. Creativity is too often treated as a nice extra rather than a vital part of a young person’s growth, confidence and future opportunities.

Spirix Studios will change that. It will give local young people the tools, space and professional support they need to develop their skills, showcase their talent and take pride in themselves and their community. It will challenge outdated perceptions of Leigh, showing our town in a positive, inspiring light.

Why your business should get involved

Backing Spirix Studios is not just an investment in the arts, it is an investment in the future of Leigh. Supporting local creativity will:

  • Directly benefit 300 young people every week with high-quality arts opportunities

  • Put performing arts on an equal footing with sport in our town

  • Bring more people into the town centre, boosting footfall and local trade

  • Strengthen community pride and improve Leigh’s reputation

  • Show your business as a champion of local talent, opportunity and positive change

We make sure our supporters are recognised. From prominent branding in our studios and publicity materials to features on our social media and invitations to see the work in action, becoming a Spirix Patron is about profile, partnership and impact.

Be part of the final step

We are close to making Spirix Studios a reality and we need local businesses to help us get over the line. Your support will fund the essentials: a kitchen for hospitality, professional lighting and sound, an acro track for specialist training, and the ongoing costs of youth workers and artists who will bring the space to life every week.

If your business believes in investing in young people, community pride and the future of Leigh, now is the time to help Together, we can create a high street home for the arts that will inspire, connect and change lives for years to come.

Get in touch: Email amyb@wigledance.co.uk or call 01942 644 955 to find out how to become a Spirix Patron.

Creative Careers: What’s Possible in The Performing Arts World?

You love to dance. Or act. Or write. Or perform.
Maybe you’re the one coming up with routines in dance class, jumping into school plays, jamming in a band with your mates, or filming and editing everything on your phone.
Or maybe you just know you want to do something creative, but you’re not sure what that actually looks like yet.

So… you’re creative. What’s next?

You love to dance. Or act. Or write. Or perform. Maybe you’re the one coming up with routines in dance class, jumping into school plays, jamming in a band with your mates, or filming and editing everything on your phone. Or maybe you just know you want to do something creative, but you’re not sure what that actually looks like yet.

Here’s the thing. In Wigan, Leigh and across the North West, there are way more jobs in the creative world than most people realise. It’s not just “become famous” or “give up”. There’s a whole spectrum in between. Loads of people are building careers doing what they love without going viral or landing a West End lead. If that’s your dream, go for it.

And if Results Day has left you excited, confused, or somewhere in between, you’re not alone. Creative careers often don’t follow a straight path and you don’t always need formal qualifications to get started. Skills, passion, experience and connections can take you just as far.

Let’s break it down.

The Performers

You probably already know this one. Dancer, actor, singer, poet, spoken word artist. You’re the one in the spotlight, connecting with people through energy and expression. Being a performer means learning your craft, building confidence and sharing stories that stick with people long after the applause fades.

The Big Idea People

Some creatives don’t need to be centre stage. They want to shape the vision. Choreographers, directors, creative leads. These are the people who imagine something bold, then bring everyone together to make it real. If you’re brimming with ideas and love guiding others, this could be your lane.

The Tech Wizards

When the lights hit just right, the music lands perfectly, and the visuals tell their own story, that’s the tech crew. Sound engineers, lighting designers, videographers. They create the atmosphere. If you love the “how” as much as the “wow”, this is a route worth exploring.

The Style Makers

Costumes. Sets. Props. Makeup. Art direction. If you’ve got an eye for detail and love making things look just right, whether with your hands or on your iPad, there’s a whole world of creative careers here.

The People People

These are the youth workers, teaching artists, workshop leaders and creative facilitators who make space for others to shine. They help people grow, build confidence and feel part of something. Creatives in these roles also spark change in communities and places, using the arts to connect people, tell local stories and shape how areas are seen and celebrated.

The Content Creators

TikToks. Reels. Behind-the-scenes videos. Posters. Brand visuals. If you’re already making content for fun, you’ve got skills the creative industry needs.

The Organised Creatives

Producers and project managers are the glue that holds everything together. Budgets, timelines, events, communication. They turn ideas into real-life moments. If you’ve got a planner’s brain but still want to be in the thick of it, this is your spot.

The Engine Room Roles

Not every creative career is on the stage or in the studio. Behind every show, festival or creative organisation is an engine room of people making things happen. Think accountants balancing the books, marketing teams spreading the word, hospitality staff making audiences feel welcome, fundraisers bringing in vital support and data specialists showing the impact of the work. These roles are just as vital to the creative sector and can be an amazing way to combine your skills with a passion for the arts.

Real Story: Gemma’s Journey from Participant to Leader

You don’t have to leave your hometown to make it in the arts. Just ask Spirix Collective member Gemma.

Gemma is 22 and from Leigh. She grew up training with Spirix, starting out as a participant in local workshops and grabbing every opportunity she could. At first, she didn’t know what she wanted to do as a career. She began studying health and social care, but soon realised her true passion was dance. She made the bold decision to change direction and study for a dance degree instead.

Fast-forward a few years and Gemma is leading her own creative projects, teaching dance, producing events and even hosting them. She’s worked as a performer, an event host and a behind-the-scenes producer. Gemma is proof that you can change your mind, follow your passion and still build a successful career in the arts right here in the North West.

Her story is a great reminder for anyone on Results Day that your next step doesn’t have to be your final step. You can try things, switch paths, and still end up where you’re meant to be.

Want to explore what’s possible?

At Spirix Collective, we’re here to help you figure it out. Whatever stage you’re at, you’ll find space to try things, meet people and start shaping your creative future in a way that works for you.

Ready to take the reins and lead your own creative project? Whether it’s a dance piece, a community event, or a bold new idea, stepping up as a young leader is all about confidence, vision, and teamwork. At Spirix, we’re all about empowering young people to take charge and make things happen. Here are our top tips to help you lead like a pro:

1. Own Your Vision

Your project starts with your passion. What story do you want to tell? What change do you want to create? Get clear on your ideas and don’t be afraid to dream big. Your vision is the compass that guides your whole journey.

2. Build Your Crew

No one creates alone. Surround yourself with people who bring different skills and energy to the table. Find collaborators who challenge you, support you, and share your commitment. Together, you’re stronger.

3. Plan but Stay Flexible

A solid plan is key — set your goals, timeline, and tasks. But remember, creativity is messy. Be ready to adapt and grow your ideas as you go. Flexibility keeps the project alive and exciting.

4. Communicate Clearly and Honestly

Good leadership means clear communication. Share your ideas openly, listen to feedback, and keep your team in the loop. Respect and honesty build trust — the backbone of any successful project.

5. Take Risks and Learn from Mistakes

Leading means stepping into the unknown. Don’t fear failure — it’s part of the process. Every mistake is a lesson that gets you closer to your goals and sharper as a leader.

6. Keep Your Passion Front and Centre

Leading a project can get tough, but your passion is your fuel. When things get tricky, remember why you started and let that fire push you forward.

7. Seek Mentors and Support

You don’t have to do it alone. Find mentors who can guide you, share experience, and open doors. At Spirix, we’re here to support young leaders every step of the way.

8. Celebrate Every Win

Big or small, every step forward matters. Celebrate your team’s hard work, the progress you make, and the moments that remind you why creativity is powerful.

Taking charge of a creative project is bold and inspiring. With the right mindset and support, you can lead with confidence, spark change, and create something truly unforgettable.

How Dance Builds Confidence & Community in Young People

At Spirix, dance is more than just movement — it’s a powerful way to build confidence, spark creativity, and create connections that last a lifetime. For young people, stepping into the dance space is like stepping into a new world where expression is celebrated, voices are heard, and every individual matters.

At Spirix, dance is more than just movement - it’s a powerful way to build confidence, spark creativity, and create connections that last a lifetime. For young people, stepping into the dance space is like stepping into a new world where expression is celebrated, voices are heard, and every individual matters.

Confidence Through Movement

When you dance, you learn to trust your body, your instincts, and your unique style. Our sessions aren’t about perfection; they’re about owning your story and moving with purpose. Every step, jump, and spin is a chance to break free from doubt and celebrate what makes you, you. This confidence spills into everyday life helping young people speak up, take risks, and believe in their potential.

Community That Lifts You Up

Dance at Spirix isn’t solo, it’s a collective journey. Our sessions bring together young people from all walks of life, building a vibrant community rooted in respect, encouragement, and shared passion. Whether it’s in a workshop, class, or performance, our dancers learn the power of teamwork, empathy, and lifting each other higher.

Creating Spaces Where Everyone Belongs

Our youth-led approach means young people shape the culture and energy of Spirix. This sense of ownership creates a safe, inclusive space where everyone is welcome. Here, differences aren’t just accepted, they’re celebrated as the very fuel for creativity and connection.

Beyond the Dance Floor

The skills learned at Spirix stretch far beyond choreography. Confidence, communication, leadership, and resilience. These are life tools our dancers take with them everywhere. Dance becomes a foundation for personal growth and community impact, inspiring young people to lead change in their own lives and beyond.

At Spirix, we believe dance is a movement for change - one that builds strong, fearless, and connected young people ready to take on the world.

From WigLe to Spirix: Why We Rebranded

We’ve been dancing through change — and this one’s big. In 2017, WigLe Dance started with one mission: to make dance accessible, high-quality, and rooted in community. And it worked. Sessions popped up in school halls, church spaces, and local venues. Hundreds of young people turned up, ready to move. Ready to be seen. But as we grew, so did the vision.

We’ve been dancing through change - and this one’s big.

The young people we worked with weren’t just attending, they were leading. Creating. Building. We weren’t just running dance classes anymore - we were launching borough-wide festivals, mentoring future teachers, and reshaping what community dance could be.

So we listened. We checked in with over 300 young people. We asked bold questions. And one thing became clear: WigLe Dance needed to evolve.

Enter Spirix.

Named after a mythical bird that stands for freedom, fearlessness, and forward motion, Spirix is more than a new name - it’s a statement.

It reflects everything we are now:
– Youth-led.
– Purpose-driven.
– Unapologetically creative.

We’ve kept the heart of WigLe. The care, the community, the high standards. But Spirix brings a wider lens: using performing arts as a tool for real change, not just in the studio but in the world.

What’s different now?

Spirix isn’t just about participation - it’s about power.

We don’t just invite young people in - we hand them the mic.

We don’t just teach dance - we develop leaders, artists, changemakers.

We’ve also built a brand-new home: Spirix Studios on Silk Street in Leigh. A space designed with and by young people. It’s bold. It’s accessible. And it’s just the beginning.

We’re still us, just with bigger wings. And we’re flying forward.
